What is the overall cost of modern wastewater treatment equipment and what are costs related to maintenance works? Are there any hidden costs, which are not obvious?

How much wastewater equipment costs

In Finland the investment required to install a modern on-site wastewater treatment plant, like sequential batch reactor package plant, is approximately 7 000 - 10 000 euros. The total costs depend on the location, soil type, the size of usable area for the treatment system, the number of users, the amount of waste water produced etc. Also the cost of installation, operation, maintenance, repair and service should be taken into account. These cost are variable and depend on circumstances and environment of the installation as well as requirements set by the technology which determine the volumes of different installation works such as earthworks and piping.

The operating costs consist of chemical, emptying, electricity and a possible service agreement. The cost of chemicals per year, about 40-60 litres, is about 200 euros. The sludge removal cost is about 100 euros one time a year. The electricity cost per year is about 40 euros.

Wastewater treatment solutions in which the investment cost is cheaper than at package plant are soil treatment (approx. 3 000-6 000 euros), holding tank (approx. 4 000-6 000 euros) and dry toilet together with grey water treatment (approx. 1 000 – 5 000 euros). In many cases a septic tank can be used as a pre-treatment to wastewater treatment and thus the operation cost of the secondary treatment system can be reduced. Usually the holding tank will become the most expensive option with its emptying charges over the years.

Possible hidden cost can be caused by the earthwork if the property is located in difficult place or if the soil type is less favourable. Also limits and regulations given by municipal environmental authorities can cause extra work and cost. Some available systems may need phosphorous or nitrogen removal kits. The bigger systems may need for instance hygiene packages such as UV-radiation treatment units.

Each on-site wastewater treatment system should be studied and planned case by case. A key perspective is good planning based on knowledge and expertise.

VillageWaters Project
VillageWaters suggest most effective wastewater treatment solutions in scattered dwellings households, which use their own, independently operated water purification systems.

Helping Homeowners
Environmentally oriented families and homeowners, who live in scattered dwellings areas, where connecting to larger wastewater plants is not option because rural distances.
