Information Tool have been presented in the Workshop on sanitation in the pan-European region and Protocol on Water and Health

In the Summary part of Workshop on Sanitation in the pan-European Region arranged by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the World Health Organization it was concluded that the Information Tool may be used for improved sanitation in the pan-European region.

The Workshop on Sanitation in the pan-European region was held in the UN Campus (Bonn, Germany) from 12-13 February 2019. The overall aim of the workshop was to take stock of the situation of sanitation in the pan-European region from health and environmental perspective and identify challenges and opportunities towards improving the situation. Specifically, the workshop has the objective to share experiences and good practices from across the region to address current sanitation challenges, including those related to small systems in rural areas.

One of VillageWaters Project Partners – University of Latvia – was requested from the Ministry of Environment and Reginal Development of Latvia Republic to share obtained experience and present the Information Tool.

During interactive session participants were invited to join the 6 different stands presented at the interactive session to learn from sanitation case studies and engage in an interactive exchange on specific solutions related to collection, treatment and disposal of human waste and wastewater. The main output of VillageWaters project – the Information Tool – was presented as among the following topics:

A. Thinking about sustainable wastewater treatment of scattered dwellings in the Baltic Sea Region (Loreta Urtane, Latvia)

B. Advancing sanitation and water supply services through improved municipal environmental and economic governance in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Jelena Vicanovic and Gorana Basevic, Bosnia and Herzegovina)

C. Waste water reuse: challenging approaches (Vasiliki Karaouli, Greece)

D. The ten-year pursue in bringing political attention to water, sanitation and hygiene in schools in the Republic of Moldova (Corina Andronic, Republic of Moldova)

E. SuSanA - A platform for knowledge exchange, networking and discussion on sustainable sanitation (Jan-Christoph Schlenk, GIZ)

F. Sustainable solutions for wastewater management in rural areas of eastern Europe, the Caucasus and central Asia (Bistra Mihaylova, Women Engage for a Common Future)

The main issues discussed in the Working Group A were possibility to introduce the Information Tools in the other countries and on capacities used for Tool development.

In official Summary of the Workshop it was stated that the Information Tool, the same as other tools presented in the workshop, may be used for improvement of sanitation in the pan-European region and correspond to the aim set by Protocol on Water and Health (Conclusion 4).
