Loreta Urtāne

Loreta Urtāne is the head of the Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of Latvia. She has over 20 years of experience in water resource management, including:

• Transfer of EU Water sector directives into Latvian legislation;
• Institutional strengthening of the water sector at the national, regional and local levels;
• Feasibility study for the development of water services and improvement of waste water discharges;
• Data evaluation and interpretation in the water and wastewater sector;
• Development and implementation of strategies for monitoring, analyzing and managing surface water quality;
• Development of educational courses and programs, course management in the field of water quality assessment for professionals and the public

Her work experience has been used in the Working Group on the National Program for the Development of Biodiversity of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of the Republic of Latvia and also as the head of the Environmental Education Strategy and Implementation Plan for the Ministry of Education and Science. Her basic knowledge of water resources was obtained by working at the Latvian Academy of Sciences and the University of Latvia for surface water protection.
